HOW TO START FRISBEE

HOW DOES MY DOG LEARN TO PLAY AND CATCH?

Your adolescent dog should be motivated to play with balls. If it is not then try build up a good motivation for prey first. You can learn how to do this reading the chapter about the pubs.
First, you should leave the dog at home when you go practising. Try to work with the disc with a human partner first.
The time it takes to learn how to throw a backhand and a forehand throw is different. Some extremely talented people may master these throws after 5 minutes already. With the right instructions anyone should be able to do it after a week of practising.
Do not take the dog with you before you master the lob and the backhand perfectly.
Before that you should try to attract the dog to the disc at home. At the beginning you should take the softest discs you can get, for example the Super Flex Fastback or even a cloth disc. Always take two discs of the same type at the beginning.
First you “only” start playing with one of the discs.
Sit down on the ground or bend over to demonstrate the game to the dog.
Let it have the get the impression that the disc is fleeing prey. Let it climb over and under your legs and kneel behind your back…

It really has to make an effort to catch the prey.
To let the dog have fun permanently it is important that you move the toy prey away from it in a way
that it will still manage to catch it when it tries hard enough.

If the dog has caught the disc you should not take it away from it. You should drag the disc. Take struggles among dogs as an example for this game. Watch dogs fighting over prey: they shake it (but only in a horizontal never in a vertical direction), they try to take he prey by sudden dragging and they strengthen their grip by maintaining an advantageous position or by reducing the others grip by dragging.
Try to play with your dog in the same way. It is very important, however, that you don’t represent a superior enemy to your dog. You should always give in to the dog a little bit when it shakes the toy prey or if it drags at it. Always hold the toy with two fingers to give the dog a real chance to snatch it away from you. Let the dog win the struggle if it tries hard enough!
If the dog runs off with the toy prey you should walk of yourself. You may as well choose the more sportive option: run off! Most dogs will run after
you carrying the toy prey in their mouths. If the dog returns the toy prey to you then you should reward it.
Take a second toy prey out of your pocket and start playing with it without paying any attention to the dog. Soon the dog will start chasing the second toy prey. Use this opportunity to take the first toy prey and put it discreetly away.

HOW TO CATCH FROM THE AIR?
====================

In order to teach your dog how to catch the disc from the air you should avoid the following mistakes:

1. Never throw the disc directly at the dog
2. Avoid throwing long distance throws

If you are right-handed you should take the disc in your right hand to perform a normal back-hand throw. The dog should sit down right to your left. Allow it enough space for a short run-up.

Move the disc further to the right and give the dog a sign to go. The dog should then follow the disc, which still rests in your hand, and snap at it.
If you and the dog have managed to do this two or three times you should give the dog a sign to go. This time, however, throw the disc! Do not throw too high nor too far! The spin of the disc is far more important.
Do not practice long distance throws before the dog masters to catch the disc from the air.
Afterwards you can begin to increase the distance of your throws little by little.
But remember never to throw in the direction of the dog! Always throw it away from the dog!
